Films from the classic to obscure that represent, honor, or parody African Americans.
This week’s questions test your knowledge of films that feature African American filmmakers, both in front of and behind the camera.
Here are the multimedia answers.
1. This 1994 film, considered by some as the This is Spinal Tap of hip-hop, featured Tone Def, Tasty Taste, and Ice Cold as Niggaz with Hats a parody of hip-hop group N.W.A.
2. Because Spike Lee produced this 1995 film, you know it isn’t your typical horror movie. Three young drug dealers are told horror stories by a funeral director about his clients, all which showcase issues relevant to African Americans, from social inequality to lynching.
3. Some consider Oogie Boogie from this movie to be a racial stereotype, as he is the blues singing, jive talking antagonist of this film from 1993.
4. This 1985 film enraged African American men, but received praise from African American women. Dr. Jacqueline Bobo accounts this to the fact that black women were able to accept the racist depiction of African Americans and instead focus on the strong female characters.
5. From 1915, this was one of the first films to establish the male African American stereotype as a sexually charged brute. It also praised the Ku Klux Klan and justified lynching. Although controversial, it remains an important part of film history for being the first feature length film.
